Something that always irritated me about the Beethoven is that it's
difficult to make the cuckoo sound good because the second note -- the C
-- is a bit too resonant. But if you take the bell off, and put the end
of the lower joint between your legs to correct the intonation, you can
get a much better, more 'cuckooey' effect. Of course, you have to
persuade the other clarinet player to do that too.

For the repeated A's at the end of the Scherzo of the Fifth Symphony, a
similar trick helps: covering the bell with your right hand slightly
mutes the sound.
