I don't think you're insane... I tried taking up french horn in 5th grade
for a little while... it went fairly well but wasn't anything that i wanted
to keep playing (I couldn't figure out how to get so many notes with only
one button :) But two years ago, I decided that I wanted to play in my
high school's jazz band, and took up trombone for the occasion. Since
then, I've become a fairly accomplished bass trombone player (I got the
bass bone seat in the District Jazz Band) and am occasionally asked to
leave the clarinet section when a piece calls for a bass bone part. I love
it! And so far, in two years, it hasn't had any negative effect on my
clarinet embouchure (at least to my knowledge). So yeah, go for it! And
have fun!
