No it is not supposed to sound horrid in the upper register. It should have
a nice clear, carrying sound. However to get it to sound good requires an
excellent mouthpiece, excellent reeds, excellent embouchure control, and
excellent breath support. On a standard Bb clarinet, it is sufficient to
merely be good to very good in these elements.
