I went to Interlochen, and the summer I went there, summer of 1964,
there were 8 clarinets in the orchestra, and we had try outs and
challenges every week. I never did get first chair, but Frank Cohen (of
the Cleveland Orchestra) did. David Schifrin was 12 years old at the
time and in a younger division.
The 2 summers preceding that unhappy summer at Interlochen, I went
to Transylvania Music Camp in Brevard, NC and I liked it much better. It
was smaller, and the calibre of music was just as good. Also, we didn't
have to wear matching knickers (the uniform at Interlochen) or have
try-outs and challenges every week. Joe Robinson, (now principal oboist
in the NY Phil) from Lenoir, NC, was there both summers and he was a
very musical and laid back person. I believe both music camps are still
around. ANNIE
