I've also been to the Sabine Meyer concert and I was amazed. I had the same
experience as you had. The next day I've been practicing four hours.
As to your remark on the clarinet students, you were right because I happen
to be one of those. I've come to the concert with five other friends who are
also playing the clarinet.

Cheers

Adrian

One of the really good things about living in this city on the Rhine is
that great performers come through.
Last Monday was no exception. Sabine Meyer was in town to play Debussy and
Brahms with the Wiener Streichsextett. The Debussy was the First Rhapsody
for Clarinet and Strings (arr. R.Leopold), and then the Brahms Clarinet
Quintet.
It was truly a great experience to see and hear her. The Debussy was a show
piece and immaculately played but it was the Brahms that was the highlight
for me. The tone and phrasing made me want to either put my clarinet in the
closet or go and practice eight hours a day. In fact I assume that most of
the clarinet students in the region were there and you could see young heads
shake in amazement.
As I listened I thought how difficult it is when there is a truly great
performer because one tends to listen to the performer and not the music.
Perhaps the most beautiful parts of the Brahms were when I shut my eyes and
just listened. Then you heard how well the instruments were blending
together so that at times you could not distinguish them.
And the others in my subject line? We have just had Sir Neville Marinner
with a Britten and Elgar concert, then comes Paul Meyer (no relation, but a
great clarinetist from the Elsace) doing Mozart and then Roger Norrington.
And all without having to leave the city.
As they say from here
