This is sometimes done on purpose. My wife had a young trumpet student show
up on the first day of beginning band with a silver-plated Bach 37 (the
trumpet equivalent of the Buffet R-13 -- the most popular professional model
here in the U.S.) She called home to make sure that the parents knew what
they were doing in entrusting such an expensive instrument to a kidlet.

Turned out that Dad is a pretty good avocational trumpet player; rather than
buy a new student horn, he just yanked one out of the closet and sent it to
school with the kid. (Dad was a little embarrassed, though, when he
realized that he sent the boy in with a Bach 1B, a mouthpiece roughly the
size of a hat.)

This child was taught by Dad the appropriate level of care for the horn.
Apparently, a ding on the horn @-----. He's now in high
school, doing very well indeed.
