The synchronicity of posts on this list surprises me sometimes.
It's as if a celestial vibration puts all of us onto the same wavelength
even though we're miles apart.
Just yesterday, I attended a performance (local music club) that
included both opera arias and a clarinet/violin/piano suite. The
clarinet suite was first, and everyone waited until the last movement
before applauding. Then the soprano sang, and everyone automatically
applauded after each aria.
The unequal frequency of applause bothered me a bit, and I
commented about this to the person sitting next to me.... who felt quite
strongly that 'protocol' from a sophisticated audience demands applause
after each aria, but applause during an instrumental suite would be
boorish.
I suppose there's some truth in this, but it still bothered me how
artificial the distinction was. The clarinet performance was worthy of
equal treatment (IMO), especially since the soprano made the (IMO) error
of singing a couple of pop songs in opera voice. I have never
understood why good singers (and the lady definitely had the skills)
can't 'hear' when a different voice is needed. If a singer can't
change his or her voice, then why not sing something else instead?
