There is a Gene Hackman movie called "The Conversation". It's
about surveillance. While the film is fiction and was filmed for
dramatic effect rather than for technical accuracy, I think it makes the
point very well about the distinction between "what is in the air" and
the interaction of multiple sound sources and "what we hear" as a result
of these interactions --- especially the scene that begins 36-37 minutes
into the film and continues for 2 or 3 minutes.
