Speaking of throat singing...I can whistle using my vocal chords. It's quite
eerie because I can do it with my mouth open and closed, and I don't have to
make any particular shape with my lips. It's all done in my throat. I can
whistle with my lips and my throat at the same time, too! I demonstrated
this to one of the voice teachers at my school, and she got on my case and
said I was going to ruin my voice that way. WELL, I've been doing it since
kindergarten, and I've never lost my voice or had any problems at all from
it. Besides, I'm a clarinetist, not a singer! Maybe it was like nails agaist
a chalk board for her...

Does anyone have any information on what exactly this is known as? I've
never had anyone be able to explain this to me.

Actually, I think that is a vocal technique called "throat singing"
(I thought all singing was "throat" singing), in which one tunes the
throat and head to emphasize certain harmonics. It can be done solo.
Look up "Ondar" on CDNow for examples of throat singing from Tuva, or
try the Fresh Air interview with Ondar at

.

Enjoy!
