As a parent I know something about it, since way back when my eldest started playing clarinet (and I didn't play at all) the school required everyone to buy a 5RV mouthpiece. I questioned the band director about this $70 additional expense I hadn't counted on and got a satisfactory answer (basically not enough time to check every kid's setup, so they concentrated on one mouthpiece and 3 brands of clarinet - Buffet, Vito, and Yamaha). The teacher was flexible enough so that if a student was taking lessons she'd let the teacher decide what was "good enough".

I don't think they knew about the inexpensive but good student line mouthpieces produced by some of our Klarinet members & Sneezy sponsors.
