Jennifer,

Rule #1 with beginners: Don't try to do everything at once. Don't be
impatient for beautiful results or even consistency - these things take
time. Tell the student when things are right and tell him how to fix them
when they aren't. If there are a lot of things wrong, pick the most glaring
one or two things and ignore the others as much as possible. It's very easy
to cause a beginner to become frustrated by tinkering with too much at once.

A #2 reed may or may not be appropriate, depending on the mouthpiece. If
listers think Vandorens and other pro-oriented commercial mass-produced
mouthpieces are inconsistent, they haven't experienced inconsistency until
they try two or three of the same model of the mouthpieces that come with
most beginner clarinets. Be sure to play the setup yourself. If in doubt,
try a 2-1/2 and see if it improves the student's sound and control or makes
them worse.

Rule #2: Enjoy the student as a person, not just as a clarinet player. You
don't say how old she is, but even the nine- and ten-year-olds can be
charmers.
