Hello Jennifer,
You haven't mentioned how long you have been teaching this student. I have
taught quite a few 4th and 5th Graders and one of the main things that I
have learned is a great deal of patience is needed with that age group.
Because the weight of the Instrument, and the cognitive reasoning, it does
take a while to get them to develop good tonal qualities. One thing that I
suggest, if your student has been playing for a month or more, is to go to
a 2.5 Rico. I only use the 2's for the first couple of weeks. If you can
get number 2 Vandoren Reeds that would even be better. Some young
students can handle a 2.5 Vandoren, depending on the mouthpiece. The other
thing you may want to look for is tension in the throat area.
When I start a student that young, I usually have them work with the Barrel
and Mouthpiece for a week before I have them put the instrument together.
I demonstrate how I want them to get a consistent sound with that set up.
I also check the pitch they get with the Barrel and Mouthpiece. I have
found that if they can get a concert F# then the will get a fairly decent
tone on the Clarinet. If I don't have a tuner, than I try to have them
match my pitch.
Whenever I have a student who starts having problems I just go back to the
basics again. There is a lot of information for them to comprehend and I
have found that the road is quite bumpy for the first few months. Of
course this varies from child to child.
Without actually being there, it is difficult to say what is actually
causing the problem. I hope that something I have said may help.

Having been a "silent" member of this listserv, I've enjoyed lots of the
info that I am learning from all of you...
But I do have a question that I hope some of you can help me with. I am a
college student (music ed) who has taught privately in the past. The
school
of music here at EIU asked me to teach a beginning student, who is in
fourth
grade. Having never really taught a beginner, I am running into
difficulties, the most important being tone production. She can sometimes
get the note out, only for about a second. We have only worked with throat
tones and the RH in the lower register. She has a good embouchure and is
using a 2 rico reed. Any suggestions on how to help her produce a tone as
well as other wonderful tips on teaching beginners??? All advice/info
would
be GREATLY appreciated!!!
