Hello all,

This thread interested me, both because I'm a student in the United States
where I am familiar with the described situations and also because it is a
topic that occurs often in my life. I've seen it everywhere from TAAS
(Texas Assessment of Academic Skills... a joke of a test) to this clarinet
list. My personal opinion on this is that students should specialize
somewhat at a younger age than 18, like other countries do (or so I've
heard). Granted, I think that the final decision on what the student
eventually does should be made later in life- perhaps around 18-, but the
lessening of material to be covered will help in covering the material the
student actually wants to learn. To take myself for example- I am more of a
math and science person than literature and history... so I would have
chosen (had I the choice) math and science (along with music and computer
science, most likely) over english and history. Others might choose
otherwise. That way teachers and students alike could handle the increased
attention to certain subjects over other, less important (to the student)
subjects. Anyway, I just wanted to get that out there:). I certainly feel
very fortunate that subjects such as foreign languages and music(!!!) are
getting plenty of attention, but those subjects aren't necessarily the
fortes (trying to get a musical term in there, hehe.. not sure if I used
that properly) of all students, and the students who don't WANT to learn
them shouldn't have to. Enough of my rambling, I'm going to go practice
now!

That was really my point before. The number one way to "empower" a child
is to teach him/her to READ. Then you don't HAVE to present ALL the
information in class -- you can give the overview and allow the student to
dig as much deeper as he/she wants "on their own." I don't think the total
mass of information is that radically different. It is just that schools
have lost their focus upon the information that is really important; that
which provides the mental framework from which to hang the rest. Why teach
a child to build a web page on the computer if he can't read and write or
add and subtract? Why subatomic physics when they can't even SPELL
"atom?" In spending so much time on the "process" the educational system
seems to be losing sight of the goal: students who are literate, with a
broad, well-founded knowledge BASE which makes capable of further growth
even AFTER they leave school!
