I have always heard that it is better to swab from the barrel to the bell so
that if the swab does get stuck on the register key tube, you can simply pull
it out. If your swab is too short, you may not be able to pull it out if it
gets stuck even if you take the instrument apart. I have had to pull some of
my student's swabs out because of this reason. I know the Buffet swabs are
not long enough to pull out (without usung needle nodes pliersor some other
tool) if they get stuck when swabbing from the bottom. The silk swabs are
long enough to pull out from the bottom, but they seem not to get stuck as
often as the cotton swabs, at least this has been my experience. Of course
this also depends how much of the swab has been pulled through when it gets
stuck. I am sure there are others who have had different experiences.
