I think from the bottom toward the top, so that, as the swab is gently
compressed by the shrinking bore diameter, it remains firmly in contact
with the walls. Obviously, if more than token resistance is met, one must
stop pulling. For what it is worth, I have NEVER seen a saxophone player
swab from top to bottom.
