Thanks, Roger! I suppose I should have been more specific about what the
exercise is.

A friend sent me an article by Jerry Hall, LeBlanc's mouthpiece expert. The
exercise as he describes it is to stuff a handkerchief swab up the bell,
stopping up the instrument, then fingering middle B, finding the embouchure
position that will produce "overtones," then learning to move between these
overtones using only embouchure and airstream changes.

I tried this (the stuffed bell exercise), and discovered that I need to take in
a lot more mouthpiece to produce those higher notes. When I use that same
embouchure in normal playing, I do get a fatter, darker sound, but I also have
some problems with producing "overtones" where they are definitely not
appropriate (in other words, squeaks and squawks).

Any thoughts on solving that problem? I'm currently playing a Selmer Series 10,
a Gigliotti P 442 mouthpiece (modified to be slightly more "open"), a Rovner
ligature, and Mitchell Lurie 4.5 reeds.

Thanks!
