My habit is to swab all instruments from the bottom or bell to the top, in
other words, pulling the moisture out the way it went in. I guess I don't
see any advantage to pulling moisture into parts of the instrument where it
doesn't already exist. This is undoubtedly due in part to the fact that I
am primarily a bassoonist, and this is extremely important on the bassoon.
Pulling moisture from the U-tube into the larger side of the boot joint can
cause wood rot and other insidious problems.
