As in most things, this is opinion. I swab from top to bottom for two
reasons. First, most of the condensation, and the tone holes where
it causes problems, is in the upper joint. Why not use the swab at
its driest in the wettest part of the horn? Something in my chemical
engineering background about the efficiency of countercurrent flow seems to
apply here!

Second, if the swab is going to get caught, it will most likely be on the
register tube. You will be more likely to have sufficient swab to pull
backwards and remove the stuck swab if you have started at the top of the
top joint.
