It's my understanding that the nine-number ZIP code contains all of the data
in your street address, apartment number, city and state. The first five
are the city (or part thereof) and the state. That leaves the street
address four digits. I've seen it explained, but can't remember which of
the numbers mean what.

As an aside on the postal service, for the last four years I've edited the
state court reporter's association's newsletter. I always get some back as
undeliverable, for a variety of reasons. This week, I got one back that was
posted 9 months ago and then another that was posted 18 months ago. Both
were marked "unknown". I haven't a clue where they've been hiding for all
that period of time.
