As a defense against telemarketers, I had Caller ID added to all of our
voice lines. The phone company blocks calls that actually block their ID.
The ones that come in "unknown" or "out of area" or whatever message is
programmed into the Caller ID are never answered. Period. Rule of the
house. (My grandchildren want to answer them and say something nasty.)
Those calls go to an answering machine, in case they are really of any
importance.

(Almost) more irritating are a couple of religious sects that go
door-to-door. To answer the door when I'm working in my office, I literally
have to go from one end of the house to the other. Sixty feet down a hall,
and then 30 feet to the front door. In spite of a sign that says "No
solicitation. No proselytizing" some of them still ring. I usually say
something outrageous to get rid of them. I had one pair almost fall off the
porch, trying to get away, when I told them that they would have to come
back when my "husband" was home, because he didn't like me talking to
strange men. <eg> They were back on their bikes and heading down the
driveway before I could get the door closed.
