For me, one "Logical" approach would have been to accept tonic, dominant
and mediant as defined; "sub" as a fifth below and "super" as a fifth
above, hence:

Tonic; Superdominant; Mediant; Subtonic; Dominant (or supertonic);
Submediant; supermediant; Tonic.

.... but I guess I thought about this 300 years to late to have an impact. ;-]
