The human ear and the mic "hear" different things; the non-linearity and processing in the human brain is different than the non-linearity and processing of a mic & amplifier. The human brain imposes a perception of something that isn't there.

The visual systems' "fooling" with our perceptions is better understood to the layman than the auditory "fooling". The full moon on the horizon subtends the same angle (is the same size) whether it is near the horizon or directly overhead, but try to tell someone that! Even when I use a card to measure the apparent diameter at arm's length it is hard for me to believe that the object is exactly the same physical size when my brain screams out that they are different.

I have Diana Deutsch's CD of aural phenomena. Interesting stuff, especially using headphones. A few samples are at http://www.philomel.com/oncd.html .
