I'm not sure why you say that it is illogical. I'd always thought that the
subdominant was 5 under the tonic, and that the submediant was 3 under the
tonic. So:
Tonic
Supertonic (or Supertone)
Mediant
Subdominant
Dominant
Submediant
Leading Note (or Subtone)
Tonic.
