I, too, teach in a public school system. I am sometimes exasperated by what
is certainly disrespect and laziness in some of my students. Those students
have always been there. They were in my classes in the late fifties and
sixties when I was a public school student. They were in the one room
schoolhouses in the nineteenth century. They were apparently there at the
time of Socrates (or whoever it was).

Yes, laziness and disrespect have been around for every generation. But
how many of the older generations were having beer parties sponsored by
parents where over three hundred youngsters showed up? (This was a recent
event in the county that I live in, where a 16 year old died in a car
crash. She was drunk from alcohol provided by the parents of the young
host of the party. After this incident, many admitted this is an all to
common occurrence). How many were dealing marijuana, LSD, and crack
cocaine? How many of the young women were chasing down boys to have sex
with them? How many times did you hear of a massacre at a local school?
How many gangs did you here about in suburban schools that shot women in
cars outside their home? (Another occurrence less than a mile from the
house I used to live in). How many extra counselors did you have to have
because of dysfunctional kids caused by family break ups?
(I was given this information after I asked a school official why they
needed to increase the budget so significantly for counselors); How many
policeman had to monitor the hall ways during the school hours? And, how
many metal detectors did you see back in the 50's?

The list goes on. What is going on now is far beyond your typical
disrespect and laziness.

Remember, on at least one occasion, the little boy who cried wolf was
telling the truth.

Does this mean that there isn't a lot of good going on. No, not by any
means. But just because my car runs fine, doesn't mean that I'm not going
to try to figure out where that strange noise is coming from.
