I wonder why you worry about the look of your platings: the only point of
importance is the tone quality. Whenever I had a chance to compare the two
platings I didn't find any difference. So the only factors of importance are
the "feel" of the plating, and the chemical reaction of it to your fingers.
(Probably there are even better alloys, but they are not used because of
their look: phosphated ore chromated might be more resistant. And then
again, the producers of those beautiful instruments we play on, also want to
make some money ...)
