I agree that reading is the most important thing --- absolutely ---
but there _are_ different modes of thought, and not all of them are
verbal.

Bringing this thread back to music, think how often list members
have argued with me that some musical concepts cannot be properly
described with words, and yet these concepts definitely influence
musicians and are communicable in non-verbal ways. Einstein claimed to
think 'spatially' and so forth. Words are not the only way to
communicate -- eg: music again, not to mention painting, sculpture, and
so forth. This is why we 'feel' that an idea is wrong and 'see' what a
person means, why some accident victims who lose spatial perception also
lose mathematical perception about comparative size (as opposed to
merely the words that describe size), and so forth.
