I have had the opposite experiences in the public schools that my children have attended/do attend - calls right away when there's any sort of problem, guidance counselors who actually try to guide, etc., and school problems no worse than those I contended with while growing up. Two of my children are still in the public school system and generally things are working out pretty well.

Perhaps the good schools don't get the coverage because they don't make the news ...
