Gene,

Actually I have all three volumes now. Although, volume three is an old
tattered version that a friend gave to me. I will be replacing it soon. I
have found the left hand exercises to be quite helpful. I actually like
them better than the Opperman exercises.

Jay -

Back in 1937, I started with the "Imperial Method" by C. L. Staats and
after
several years graduated to Gustave Langenus Part III, "Virtuoso Studies and
Duos", supplemented by Klose, Lazarus, Pares, Rose Etudes and in the early
40's, Jeanjean 18 Etudes. Thus, I don't have any knowledge of the Langenus
Parts I & II, but I would expect that they are both of the same extremely
high quality as Part III. To me, the Langenus III is a sort of a "bible"
for intermediate to advanced and professional clarinetists. I believe that
I have read on the list that the Rubank books are really designed for class
instruction. For a serious student, I am sure that the Langenus books
would
be better than the Rubanks.

After resuming playing in 1996, I purchased a new copy to replace my now
battered and falling-apart original. I use it in warming up every day and
to improve my technical abilities and musicianship.

Jay, If you don't own the Langenus III yourself, I sincerely suggest that
you purchase it.

I would like to poll the list to see if anyone has used or are using the
Langenus Method books. I have started experiment with volume one for some
of my students that seem to have trouble with the Rubank approach. Any
thoughts?
