Vandoren blackmaster reeds are very good. I have been using them for
sometime now and haven't had a huge problem with them. Most of my reeds are
worked on a reed machine, copied from a model that works exceptionally well.
But even blackmaster reeds out of the box unworked are fine if you shave a
little off the left side with a reed knife. Also, the rico grand concert
select thick blank work similar to a v12 but a little different. I am now
starting to learn to make reeds from scratch and look forward to producing a
consistent reed. Not that I am knocking vandorens, but I haven't found any
commercial reed that I truly like(the closest I have found is the
blackmasters).
