I now have made a couple of barrels that work on my Buffet R-13 and Selmer
10-G's.

The cocobolo makes a lovely warm rich tone. It however has a tendency to
expand and shrink a great deal, I'm going to have to look into ways of
stabilizing the wood. If anyone has pointers on this, I wood appreciate it
greatly.

I played one of my cocobolo barrels at rehearsal last night. After some oohs
and ahhs from some of my colleagues in the woodwind section, we settled down
to play.

I was pretty comfortable, although I had to concentrate on not letting the
throat tones go slightly flat. (on my next barrel I'm going to make the
reverse cone in the barrel a little more tapered to see if this helps).

At the end of the rehearsal I got good reviews on tone quality. My oboe
playing colleague thought that the tone was open and more consistent
throughout the range of the horn. That was nice to hear. My wife liked it
too, and she is my best critic.

I also made a barrel from Delrin, not as pretty a sound, but very consistent.

I cannibalized an old barrel for the rings to put on the cocobolo barrel. The
delrin barrel doesn't have rings.

Question - should I continue these reports on barrel making experiments, or
is it a waste of time for most people here?

Walter
