Just a guess that 5ths and octaves are so closely related (the dominant and
the octave tonic are very near harmonics - 2nd and 1st respectively - of the
low note) that the tuner just interprets them as part of the lower pitch's
harmonic content. The subdominant isn't in the harmonic series until two
octaves above where the student (top voice) is playing, perhaps explaining
why it sounds to the tuner as a separate note.

FWIW - By the way, I haven't tried this, so I don't know if it's a
tuner-dependent occurrence.
