Several others have already answered showing the many legitimate ways to
divide this. Which particular one applies will depend on the music and its
tempo. A very slow piece will probably be beat as 12 beats to the measure
with an 1/8 note getting a beat. If it is a quick "Irish jig" type tune,
then it would be 4 triplets to the measure. Contemporary works will
generally give a tempo marking that the conductor will interpret to come up
with the particular way to count that piece.
