Normally, that would be either 12 beats per measure (the eighth note is the
basic beat unit) or 4 beats per measure (with the dotted quarter note being
the basic beat unit). (Four groups of three, not three goups of four, or
six groups of two.) But, some other arrangements are possible in
contemporary or recent music.
