I'm up to date on the lessons, and I don't run any performing ensemble
(except for the city band, which is exempt) so I don't have to worry
about it myself. However, high school kids who do the typical early
career playing around town are getting hit with back tax bills. I
discovered that despite the way the law was presented in the newspaper,
musicians who play in the local symphony don't have to charge the
orchestra sales tax. I think that it's ridiculous to make kids do this.
As for lessons, everyone I know of charges an odd amount, like $19.33
(or whatever) so that the figure comes out even.
