Subj: [kl] Poulenc's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano
Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2001 22:18:33 -0500

Hello all,

I've been practicing "Sonata for Clarinet in B Flat and Piano" by
Francis Poulenc for an upcoming solo and ensemble competition. I think I
originally heard of it from this list, actually. Anyway, I'm having a bit
of difficulty towards the end of the third movement. Two instances occur
(measure 116 (13 from the end) and measure 121 (8 from the end) in which the
note progression A (above the staff, an eighth note), F (top line,
sixteenth), D (2nd line down, sixteenth), A (3rd space down, sixteenth), D
(same as before), F (same as before), Bb (above the staff, sixteenth), then
an A half note, above the staff happens. I can't seem to smoothly go from
the D to A back to D. When I go slowly it works just fine, but when I try
to build it up to tempo, my fingers seem to do their job, but the smooth
transition isn't there. Any ideas as to what else I might do to work on the
problem?

TIA,
-Michael L.
