I think it's wrong to withhold praise from a child who is trying.
[snip] They praised us all the time over nothing. All we had to do was
show up and not kill each other. They had us stand up together in class
and chant, "I AM somebody! I AM somebody!" IMHO you're nobody if you
don't learn how to accomplish something.

I agree with you that unrealistic praise is a bad thing. This was
a situation where the young lady (6 years old) practiced till she was
weary and came away from the event in actual tears because every child
out of approximately 30 except herself came away with a green ribbon.
Yes, it is precisely the same situation as my daughter experienced in
art class a few weeks ago. She's in chorus now and learning to 'hear'
a piece in 4 sharps. She giggled a bit when she brought the piece home
and I blanched while trying to play along with her. Good training for
_me_!
I am hoping that the ribbonless girl's parents find another teacer
and make her a ribbon themselves.

<><> What you are is what you do.

Not completely, IMO, if by "what you do" you mean your skills as opposed
to your attitude.

But I don't want to get into a flame war about this. I was just
venting.....

Cheers,
Bill
