Bill,
By all means try it! The biggest differences I've seen between more and
less expensive instruments are keys for low c/c# and f/f# on the larger
instruments as well as touchpieces for some fingers so that they don't have
to stretch out so far to meet the holes.
I would second the recommendation for Yamaha recorders- they're very
reasonably priced and tune and play well. Plastic is definately the way to
go! I play with a trio and occassionally play recorder- my plastic Yamaha
works just fine in duets with my friend's Mollenhaur (and whatever other
incredibly expensive instrument he is using at the time). That said, if I
really played that much I would learn voicing and use a wooden
instrument.... strictly aestetic reasons!
