Yes, they are pitched in C. For at least 2 centuries,
the BLOCKED FLUTE, or "blockflote", as the Germans
call it was the preeminent wind instrument in the
Courts of Europe. The Oboe was considered a military
marching instrument, as were the Bassoon and all the
Brass. Until the mid-1700's when the Transverse Flute
(then made out of wood) came into its own, all major
"flute" pieces were intended for the Recorder.
Therefore, most Baroque wind compositions can be
played on whichever size recorder encompasses the
necessary range. There is a huge repertoire for
Recorder.
In fact, the instrument your daughter has is
essentially the same design which was around in the
early 1700's, even if it is made out of plastic.
