I've just been reading an interesting book of anecdotes by concert pianist
Gary Graffman, "I Should Really Be Practicing". In passing, he mentions a
preference for leaving the lid open on the big stick when performing duets
with another instrument. Most people put the lid half open, on the short
stick, thinking that will make the piano quieter. He thinks it just makes the
piano sound muffled to the pianist, who then compensates by playing louder.
