Ben I always enjoy your posts on recording. I've come to recording sound by
way of being a studio photographer, that means working with multiple lights.
One of my early teachers told me something early on, in portrait work that
has made a difference in my photos and in stereo sound recording. That was
"remember there is only one sun!" Translated that means the minute you put up
a second light, it must be subordinate to the main light. You can use it to
"fill" the shadows so they appear lighter, but you must never make it
brighter than the main light. This is for light 2- infinity! Translated into
recording that means: You only have one set of ears! 2 mics equal on set of
ears. These first 2 mics establish your "sonic" perspective. I believe that
really great recording only has ONE perspective! If you add more mics it
becomes trickier to keep your "Sonic" perspective.

Ben I have found that when using a stereo pair that I've always gotten a more
transparent sound if I kept the clarinet directly in the middle of the pair
and completely off axis. Does this wash with your experience?
