Where in the world did you get that "trick"?! I cannot imagine anything
worse than doing that. If you do that, you will *only* get a muffled sound.
You can do tricks where you place absorbent material near microphones to do
things like minimize floor reflections, but never put anything over a mic
that is not specifically made for that purpose. There are some foam
windscreens out there that are great for rolling a tad bit off the extreme
high end (around 10k on up), but they are made to be as acoustically
transparent.

Sometimes, I'll put a rug or a moving blanket under the players or a piano
to tame the sound a bit, but never any more than that.
