Subj: [kl] I've been quiet......

I've been pretty quiet on the list lately. I haven't disappeared or gone
AWOL.

I have been doing some stuff that is pretty fascinating.

My lovely and musically talented wife bought me a lathe and a whole bunch of
tools and stuff for my birthday and Christmas. Since the first of January,
I've been down in the basement making barrels.

I've been working with cocobolo (and no, no rashes or breathing allergies
yet) and I have made several barrels. The first batch were really trash,
since it is SO easy to misjudge the tolerances.

I now have made a couple of barrels that work on my Buffet R-13 and Selmer
10-G's.

The cocobolo makes a lovely warm rich tone. It however has a tendency to
expand and shrink a great deal, I'm going to have to look into ways of
stabilizing the wood. If anyone has pointers on this, I woud appreciate it
greatly.

The most fun in this is experimenting with materials to see how the tone is
affected, and to also experiment with different shapes and tapers in the
interior bore. Right now I am trying to accurately duplicate a Moennig-like
reverse taper and to reproduce it consistently. As Spock would say
"Fascinating, Captain!" Also, frustrating as you-know-what!

When I get a minute, I'll post a photo of some of these barrels on my website.

who has also gotten hooked on the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novels......
