Ginger,
To add to the information about your situation.
The bad habits that you can develope from squeezing the keys to make the
pads close and blowing differently for upper register can be a problem
later.
I haven't seen this suggestion --that will seem trashy to some members of
the list--
but it may be possible to *temporarily* reduce the problems of holey pads
if you put a piece of plastic food wrap over the pad and key, like a
Hersey's Kiss wrapper.
Not good for long use, can turn metal ugly colors, but can give temporary
relief for worm eaten or unglued pads.
I did this once for a student (the pad under throat A key) who had one
lesson two days before Solo and Ensemble, who was not able to get to a
repairman.
Got the idea from my father telling me about "in my day" (in 1930's) any
sax player who didn't have at least one pad covered with cellophane from
cigarette pack wasn't an experienced dance band player.
Maybe it was a macho thing %;-)
Actually, they all had full time "day" jobs, then drove 20 to 50 miles to
the dance halls on weekends, money was tight, stores weren't open
evenings.
