Subj: [kl] JPP info for Marine Band Clarinetist
Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2001 11:36:16 -0500

Greetings List,
Here is a post I received from a Northwestern Alumni
friend who is now a clarinetist in the U.S. Marine Band. He
is looking for information regarding John P. Paynter. Can
anyone on the list offer any help? Thanks. Lori Lovato

Can any of you help with this?!?

The U.S. Army Field Band produces a series of educational reference
recordings on compact disc that are available free on request to educational
institutions. These recordings are painstakingly researched to authenticate
standard performance practices and to reflect the original intent of the
composers. The enclosed booklets include historical background on the
composers, detailed program notes on each selection, and vintage
photographs. CDs currently distributed to educational institutions and
requesting music educators include Edwin Franko Goldman, Aaron Copland (2),
Hank Levy, Stan Kenton and Randall Thompson.

COL Finley R. Hamilton, conductor and commander of The U.S. Army Field Band,
would like the next reference recording to feature John P. Paynter. We are
attempting to obtain a complete list of music written for JPP (as Director
of Bands at NU; as conductor of the Northshore Concert Band; etc.), arranged
by him, commissioned by NU, and in his memory. I spoke with Marietta in
December and she suggested I speak with Mr. Jim Sheppard, Department
Assistant for the NU Band Department. I briefly explained the project to him
and requested the band staff librarian provide such a list based on what is
in the NU band library. I received a copy of all the pieces JPP arranged
earlier today.

I am finding it very difficult to get titles for pieces commissioned by JPP,
dedicated to JPP as Director of Bands at NU OR Northshore Concert Band, or
in his memory. If you have any ideas on this or remember pieces from when
you were at NU, please share them with me.

COL Finley R. Hamilton would like to draw up a list of possible pieces for
the reference recording ASAP. Any assistance you can provide would be most
appreciated. Thanks!
