Many thanks for excellent advice received thus far from Ed Branham, Richard
Bush, Clark Fobes, Grant Green, Don Gross, and Ben Maas! The search for the
affordable contra clarinet continues. Based on some of the recommendations, I
hereby set aside my anti-Bundy bias and will consider these as viable options
also. And to clarify one point, I'm on a VERY tight budget, so such niceties as
Leblanc BBb paperclip and Selmer rosewood EEb contras are probably out of my
price range. An instrument needing extensive repairs is probably what I'll have
to get, since my labor is "free" while my wallet is thin.
An operational question for the crew: It's been suggested to me that, for
my intended use in wind ensemble, an EEb contra-alto might be a better choice
than BBb contra-bass, because this would allow me to read baritone sax parts
without transposition when contra parts aren't available. If I were to get a
BBb contra, however, I'd probably end up reading tuba parts in those
circumstances. Those of you who regularly play contra, what would you suggest?
Again, thanks to everyone for the wisdom!
