There have been a variety of responses about the possible origin
of leaking air from around the mouth. I had this problem as a
music major in college (no problem of lack of practice). I
finally discovered that when I leak, the read is warped (does not
lie flat on a flat surface). For me, it was and still is as
simple as that. Isn't it great when a problem has an easy
answer? (I also discovered that you can buy wide, coarse nail
files/emory boards at beauty supply stores to use to fix warped
reeds. My students can squeeze them into those incredibly tiny
spaces in their cases.)
