Ian--

Why not do the entire Poulenc Sonata and the entire Weber Grand Duo. The
Poulenc is 13-14 minutes in total and the Weber Grand Duo is no more than 20
minutes (I know it's less, but I don't remember the exact range).

If you need a third piece, the Stravinsky Three Pieces is approximately 4
minutes in duration, and is unaccompanied.

Subject: [kl] Recital/exam help

Hi list,

I'm working towards an examination (I need the motivation) and am a little
stuck for ideas as to what to prepare. The requirement is to put together a
balanced recital of 30-40 minutes (including breaks between pieces and one
longer 5 min break) from the syllabus list. In effect, I'm looking for 30
minutes of music. The syllabus list is at
http://www.abrsm.ac.uk/diplomas/clarinetdipabrsm.html
and I'm pretty settled on the Weber Grand Duo (mvts 1&2) and the Poulenc
Sonata (mvts 2&3). This ought to give me about 23-24 minutes of music, so
I'm looking for another 6-7 minutes. I don't want to run any risk of going
over.

The problem I have is that I can find many pieces of the right duration, but
I'd like to get a piece which is chronologically between the two above (1816
and 1962). I am able to choose one non-syllabus piece of up to 7 minutes. Of
course, Brahms would be ideal, but the syllabus specifies any _two_
movements of either Sonata, so I don't think I could get away with just the
one, and two movements would be too long. Besides, I already have a Sonata
in the programme. So, could anyone suggest a piece (either from the syllabus
or not) which was composed somewhere between 1850 and 1910 (approx) of an
appropriate standard? Ideally I'd like either a concerto movement or an
unaccompanied piece.

Alternatively, if anyone can give me publisher information for the Gershwin
3 preludes (clarinet & piano transcription), that should sufficiently
contrast the classical Weber and the modern Poulenc, being
jazz-influenced....

As always, thanks in advance.

Ian
