To play, or not to play with one's students, that is the question...

I didn't know there could be so much controversy over this. I've never
taught, but I have been a student, and I valued and enjoyed the rare
occasions when my teacher would actually play with me. One time, my lesson
consisted of playing trios with my teacher and his wife (a basoonist). Most
times, my teacher wouldn't play, and this made the times when he did
special. After all, making music is, IMHO, a social experience. Whilst
some unaccompanied clarinet solos are extremely beautiful, nothing compares
to ensemble playing. And there is nothing like the buzz of playing in an
orchestra. There you are, just one player of many. Your part by itself is
nothing - a mere orchestral excert. Everyone else's parts are the same.
Put it all together and you create something extraordinary. On a smaller
scale, I appeal to all you teachers, play with your students just every once
and a while! Gavin
