Dear Ed, You would have to be there to know what i'm talking about.
Playing along with a student to help them sound good, like with
"sympathetic vibrations" is wonderful...tone therapy. If you could have
heard my students, most of them 9 or 10 years old, play together for my
annual Christmas party, "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World", after
having only played clarinet since Sept. 15, you could have mistaken it
for a clarinet choir from Heaven. At least I could have. I'm sure that
my style of teaching will change as each week goes by, but "Playing
along" is what I have been doing up till now. It has been a major
ahievement for the children to cover the holes of the clarinet with the
right hand and play with a full tone. For that experience, I wrote out
some "mantras" (repititious passages moving one finger only -- over and
over) to encourage them to practice with good results. Lord only knows
what will happen when they go over the break. I'm sure that Tony Pay
will be able to help me out with that, perhaps with a good philosophical
essay on "creativity". I'm ready. ANNIE
