I started teaching 20 beginning clarinet students in September. They all
sounded like beginners -- terrible. I found that when I would ask them
to hold a tone as long as they could, while a played an improvized
passage that went along with the particular note that they were holding,
that their tone became noticable improved and they seemed to enjoy the
experience. I don't want to get into an argument about the evils of
playing along with students. It is working very well for the students
and for me. If other teachers can get good results without playing
along, then I'm happy for them. ANNIE
